1b) Read and make references from texts 2) Read texts and understand the effects of language features 3) Read and understand writer's purpose and style 4a) Read and understand the structure of texts 4b) Read and understand the effect of organisation on texts |
You need to have 2 pieces of writing in your portfolio to show your progress at each level on the ladder. |
WORKSHEETS
1) Write With Purpose and StylePURPOSE
Writing with purpose means clearly responding to an instruction. For example, if your teacher has asked you to write DESCRIPTIVE WRITING ABOUT YOURSELF. Then you would write the Title clearly on the top of the page. The first sentence would introduce your topic. You might also write your instructions at the top of the page so that it is clear what purpose your writing is for. EXAMPLE: Title: Writing About Myself Purpose: I am writing to describe myself. My teacher has asked me to include some of the following topics: name, appearance, personality, family, friends, relationships, hobbies and inner qualities. First Sentence: My name is John Doe and I am a happy teenager. |
STYLEWriting with style usually means adding adjectives, interesting vocabulary and language features to your writing.
EXAMPLE:
EXPLANATION:
The boring style writing is 2 very short sentences and just states minimal information. The interesting style uses a clever introduction e.g. "Introducing", adds the descriptive words "talented" and "happy" includes more information E.g. full name, age and where he lives. He also includes a rhetorical question at the end. A rhetorical question is a question that does not need or expect an answer. This is known as a language feature. |
2a) Write Using Organised Ideas
In writing, it is important to structure and organise your ideas to make it easy for the reader. Imagine you have to write about the 3 Little Pigs story and you have these 3 ideas about the second little pig.
If you wrote about the ideas in this order - a,b,c then your paragraph would not make much sense!
|
Two Ways That Would Be More Organised:
|
The second little pig knew that sticks would be stronger than straw.
He chose to use sticks because he wanted to protect himself and ensure that the wolf would not blow his house down.
This shows that the second little pig was observant and clever because he saw what happened to the first pig and thought of a better solution.
|
2b) Write Using
|
|
EXAMPLE
Name and definitionThis side shot is taken from the side angle to show two characters side by side.
|
Describe (and describe background)A man with a cap is smiling holding a pink baby who looks like he is about cry. He is screwing his face and fists up. There is a blurred cornfield in the background.
|
ExplainThe director wanted to make the audience see that the man was holding the baby and that this made him feel happy because he is smiling. The baby is not happy because he is crying. It makes the audience wonder if the baby will cry and what the man will do then.

3) Write to maintain your reader's interest
|
writing from cooltext.comThe second pig became more aware of the danger that the wolf presented and carefully thought about the problem. He decided to use stronger materials than the lightweight straw that his brother had chosen. His choice to construct a house using sticks shows that he was clearly more intelligent than the first pig.
Less use of the word "the".
There are some long and some short sentence lengths. The sentence structure is varied. The writer using conjunctions such as "and" and "than". The writer uses adjectives such as "carefully", "lightweight" and "clearly". Overall, there is more detail added into the writing and it flows well. |
4) Write with technical accuracyWriting with technical accuracy means paying attention to details. These check cards should help you check over your work before you hand it in. Things to check include: Capital letters: at the start of each sentence, for somebody's name, for the word "I" and for a place name! Full-stop, Question mark or exclamation mark at the end of each sentence. A variety of sentence lengths, some short, some long! |
|
5) Spell complex and ambitious wordsPeople with a broader vocabulary are more successful.
Extending your vocabulary takes time and effort.
It's important to try to extend your vocabulary and use new words every day if you can. |
Spend some time flicking through the dictionary.
