Analyse Screen Shots

Consider the eight screen shots below and do the following activities:
a) name the shot
b) explain whereabouts in the film the shot was taken
c) describe the effect of that camera angle on you as the viewer
d) describe why you think the director chose to use that type of shot
Picture

Constable Riggs

Low camera angle to show superiority.
Medium close up shot to make the audience feel, as the girls do, that he is too close.
Dark picture to show that there are bad things occurring.
Picture

Maud on the ground

Low camera angle to show she is beaten into submission.
Close-up shot to make the audience feel intimate with her and her hardship.
This light and dark image represents their previous happiness and the current sadness.

Riggs takes the girls

The long shot is used to show the viewer the Jigalong settlement, the fence, the car and the action. The rabbit proof fence is significant although it is in the background of the shot.

Gracie and Daisy

Medium close up shot to show the innocence and fear on the girls' faces.
Acting - Notice the way the girls eyes are wet from crying and they are looking outside to see what happens with Molly. Also the way Daisy's hand clings onto Gracie's clothing to show her fear.
Picture

Molly's eyes

This extreme close up shot of Molly's eyes shows her eyes slowly opening. It immediately cuts to the shot  of the spirit bird flying in the sky. This gives the impression that Molly has made a spiritual call to the spirit bird, so that the call for help will be relayed to her family members nearby.
Picture

Molly and Daisy

This aerial shot/bird's eye view shows the two girls lying exhausted in the desert. The director has used an aerial shot to link in the motif of the spirit bird. This is how the bird would see the girls, but it also suggests that the girls might be about to die and eaten by vultures. The audience senses their vulnerability and the full challenge of their situation.

Picture

Mr A.O. Neville

This low angle shot, shows Mr A. O. Neville from the point of view of Molly as she approaches him for her skin to be inspected for 'fairness'. In using this type of camera angle, the director enables the audience to see Mr Neville as if through Molly's eyes and we understand that she would perceive him to be quite strange.
Picture

Gracie, Molly & Daisy

In this medium close up image, we see the 3 girls silhouetted against a (surprisingly) green bush background. The 2 older girls shield their eyes from the sun and the audience is given the impression of  the vulnerability of the younger girl. The 3 are united in the frame to show that it is them versus the land in a fight for survival.

Moodoo

This low angle long shot shows Moodoo at work in the Australian outback. Moodoo's dark skin is contrasted against the simple background colours of the blue sky and the brown earth. His uniform seems to starkly contrast against the wilderness. Does Moodoo allow the girls to escape, or do they outsmart him?
Picture

Moodoo & AO Neville

This close up shot deliberately contrasts Moodoo's dark skin with Mr A. O. Neville's white skin. It effectively uses the sun on Mr Neville and places Moodoo in the shadow to illustrate the power balance between black and white that is emphasized in the film's text.

Eugenics

Richard Dawkins explains that eugenics is still occurring today's society.
