1a. What type of shot is this?In this mid-shot of Little John, we see only his top half. He is wearing a Hawaiian shirt with bright red flowers and an awkward facial expression. |
1b. How does it make you (the viewer) feel?First of all, it makes you laugh because Little John looks so uncomfortable and out of place, then the viewer feels sympathy for him because they appreciate that he likes Miriam and that it is difficult for him.

2a. What type of shot is this?
The director chose to use an over-the-shoulder shot to show Ali from the point of view of immigration. From this perspective Ali's angry facial expression makes him seem menacing and aggressive. |
2b. How does it make you (the viewer) feel?
By this point in the film, the viewer has already developed sympathies with Ali and want him to stay. The director has chosen to show the shot from this point of view to clearly show how Ali's feelings and so that they understand that rules are rules that have to be followed. |
3a. What type of shot is this?
When Kung Sang is outside the gates at the port, the camera films him from behind the gate so that you can only see part of his face. |
3b. How does it make you (the viewer) feel?
The effect of this is to make the viewer see Kung Sang's situation clearly. He feels emotionally trapped by his grief and the feeling is shown literally by showing him from this camera angle. Cleverly, you can only see part of his face which reminds us that he does not feel whole without his wife. |

In the scene where Kenny punches Big John, we are shown big John from Kenny's point of view. The camera is close enough to show that Big John has a determined and angry expression on his face. |
5b. How does it make you (the viewer) feel?
The viewer's sympathies are already aligned with Kenny because Big John has not been very nice to anybody through the film. The director chooses to show him from Kenny's point-of-view to emphasize the fact that everybody is against Big John. The close-up of Big John's face makes the audience want to hit him too. |
