Teaching RationaleStudents had a grounding in essay writing last term with reference to a novel.
This unit is intended to build and extend on their essay writing skills and allow them to improve on their earlier efforts. 9-6 are only ever taught in the afternoon slot so it will alleviate some of the pressure they may have been feeling and allow for partial tuition lessons and partial relaxed interpretation of character and theme. Essays completed by students at the end of Term 2 based on characters from The Hobbit will form part of the pre-assessment for this unit. Feedback on these essays will inform me of their strengths, weaknesses etc and guide on appropriate groupings.
Simon Birch was filmed in 1998 and features a young boy with stunted growth who is convinced that God intends his life to have a higher purpose.

Feedback and Analysis
Student N (chiefs)Student N seems to have missed the whole point of the teaching in Term 2. The essay he delivered did not follow the structure that was taught. Although he did grasp the idea of an introduction that names characteristics, he does not comprehend the need to expand on this in the paragraphs and slips into merely telling the plot. The essay below shows that he is capable of handling detail as suggested by the phrase about Orcrist.

Student A (highlanders)This student gave me the impression that she understood and I thought she would do well but then her submission did not reflect this.
My intention is for her to clarify her understanding of the essay structure so that she delivers a complete essay next time. (Note: she shows the ability to achieve considerably higher with a wide vocabulary and clear explanations). |
Student M (hurricanes)This student showed initiative in choosing a unique character to work on.
He writes clearly but would benefit from vocabulary extension and developing his ideas in relation to the wider world. |
Student E (hurricanes)This student produced an excellent essay for her pre-assessment and showed great dedication in preparing it.
My intention for this group was; to extend their ability to express their ideas; to develop their social skills to work better with other; and to encourage them to link ideas from the wider world (using the extension activity listed above). |
